“All the right tones of jazz, R&B, and singer-songwriter”
— Downbeat Magazine (from 4 1/2 - star review of “A Way With Words” EP)
Biography
Singer-songwriter Anson Jones stands out with her unique blend of jazz, folk, rock, and R&B. Her second EP, Unspoken, was released May 31 on Secret Sun Recordings. At times introspective, at times carefree, the six songs balance vintage warmth with modern vibrance. The project was co-written and produced by songwriter and guitarist Jesse Harris.
Her first EP, A Way With Words, is a dreamy soundscape with an edge. It was released on Modern Icon Recordings via Ropeadope and got a 4 1/2 star review from Downbeat Magazine, which praised it as “poppy, expressive, vibrant, rich and textured … finding all the right tones of jazz, R&B, and singer-songwriter.” Bursting with ideas, this collaboration between Anson and the drummer-producer Adrian Harpham landed on Downbeat’s “Best of 2022” list.
Before writing music, Anson gained recognition for her vocal talent, winning 6 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards before she started at Princeton University (’22), where she won the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts as well as the Isodore and Helen Sacks Memorial Prize in Music. Alongside her studies in composition, architecture, and computer science, she continued to work on her solo project at NYC venues like the Triad Theater, the 5PM Series, and the 2020 Litchfield Jazz Festival. After graduation, she focused increasingly on her songwriting: she has been a repeat guest at the legendary New York Songwriters’ Circle at the Bitter End, and she won the 2022 John Wallowich Award for songwriters from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets.
